Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Southern Africa is part of a global network of dedicated professionals committed to providing medical humanitarian assistance in regions affected by conflict, disasters, and epidemics. Our work is guided by medical ethics and driven by a common mission to address the healthcare needs of vulnerable populations. We operate in over 70 countries, where our diverse teams of doctors, nurses, logisticians, water and sanitation experts, and other professionals collaborate to deliver essential healthcare services.

MSF Southern Africa, based in Johannesburg with an additional office in Cape Town, is governed by the MSF Southern Africa Association, which comprises over 300 members from seven countries within the region. We work not only to deliver critical medical aid but also to raise awareness of crises and mobilize public support for our mission.

The Association Communications Internship aims to support the MSF Southern Africa Association Unit in enhancing engagement through strategic communication channels. The intern will play a key role in fostering social engagement, creating and managing content, and developing innovative social media strategies. This position is ideal for individuals interested in advancing MSF’s communication objectives while promoting the values of the Association.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Association Team to design and implement evolving marketing strategies, ensuring the integration and currency of content across the Association's website (Inside OCB), SharePoint microsite, and social media platforms.
  • Develop relationships with users by creating, sharing, and engaging with content across social media channels.
  • Regularly update Inside OCB with content from MSF’s global Communications network and locally produced material, tailored to specific objectives.
  • Post MSF-related content on identified external platforms.
  • Design and manage social media promotional campaigns and advertisements.
  • Monitor and respond proactively to social media trends, ensuring that the Association remains adaptive and responsive.
  • Track, measure, and report on the performance of social media initiatives.
  • Engage proactively with users on social media, fostering interaction and building engagement.
  • Assist with other Association-related activities as needed.
Qualifications
  • A degree or national diploma in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • A keen willingness to learn; no prior work experience is required.
  • A strong interest in humanitarian issues and MSF's mission.
  • Proficient understanding of social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
  • A background or strong interest in managing social media accounts and developing digital communication and marketing strategies.
  • A creative and adaptable approach to work, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within a team.
  • Strong proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to balance short-term tasks with long-term responsibilities and to work efficiently under pressure, especially in urgent or breaking news scenarios.
  • A desire to work collaboratively and share knowledge with others.
