The South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) and the Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA) established a Collaborative Agreement to initiate the Wind Industry Internship Program (WIIP). This program is designed to provide recent graduates and individuals currently enrolled in graduate programs with practical work experience that is aligned with their academic pursuits and interests in sustainable energy solutions. The WIIP offers mutual benefits: it enhances the skill sets of participants while providing SAWEA members with valuable assistance from qualified individuals across various professional domains, thereby expanding the talent pool within the renewable energy sector.
The WIIP also serves as a critical support system for unemployed graduates in South Africa, equipping them with essential practical skills relevant to the renewable energy industry. The program aims to address the skills shortage prevalent in the South African energy sector by significantly bolstering the renewable energy skills base. To further enrich participants’ workplace readiness, a 10-day work readiness program is included. The overarching goal is to extend the program's reach, benefiting up to 300 learners.
Interns participating in the WIIP will engage in various tasks related to their specific areas of study and professional interests, which may include but are not limited to:
- Assisting with engineering and technical projects within the wind energy sector.
- Supporting IT initiatives and digital solutions.
- Contributing to financial analysis and reporting.
- Engaging in communication and external relations activities.
- Participating in climate and green growth initiatives.
- Collaborating on procurement and general service tasks.
- Aiding in research related to governance, knowledge management, and policy development.
Candidates for the WIIP should meet the following criteria:
- Recent graduates or students currently enrolled in relevant graduate programs.
- A strong interest in sustainable energy solutions, particularly in the wind energy sector.
- Demonstrated skills or academic background in one or more of the following areas: engineering, IT, finance, law, human resources, communication, or environmental science.

- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Participants in the WIIP will receive numerous benefits, including:
- Practical work experience in the renewable energy sector.
