The Field Operations Internship offers a comprehensive opportunity for individuals seeking to gain practical experience in product sampling, inspection, and data management within the context of the chemical engineering field. Interns will work closely with experienced professionals to develop their technical skills and understanding of field operations.
Interns will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Ensure all sampling and inspection equipment is clean and functioning properly before and after use.
- Witness the packing of containers (drums, etc.) in accordance with client or internal procedures.
- Collect samples from various sources and ensure accurate labeling and registration for laboratory analysis.
- Continuously update job files with relevant inspection reports and results.
- Assess the cleanliness of pipelines through line pigging and issue corresponding cleanliness certificates.
- Record and collate weighbridge certificates and inspect road tankers.
- Perform inspections to verify the cleanliness of containers, including road, rail, and ISO tanks, as well as storage tanks.
- Manage the loading of bitumen onto bulk vessels following internal working procedures.
- Monitor road tankers during the loading of vessels and obtain weight certificates for each delivery, followed by inspecting empty road tankers.
- Communicate any changes or events that may adversely affect company operations to the immediate supervisor or manager.
- Oversee crude tank farm operations, including sealing and isolating pipeline valve systems, gauging, sampling, and water drainage, while maintaining a log of events and reporting any anomalies promptly.
- Accurately record inspection data and results in field notebooks to facilitate traceability.
- Seal valves and hatches on pipelines, tank valves, and road/rail tanker valves to ensure safety and compliance.
- Conduct tank gauging to assess product levels and temperatures in storage tanks, issuing dip sheets and cleanliness certificates as needed.
- Complete inspection certificates and reports with precision and clarity.
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
- A valid Code 08 driver’s license is required.
- Residency in Durban is mandatory.
- Possess NQF Level 2-4 in Chemical Engineering or a related field.
- Must currently be unemployed.
- Hold a Grade 12 certificate or N3 qualification with Mathematics and Science as subjects.
